UPDATE 12/4/2021!

Hey, guys! What's up?
I hope you didn't wait long >_<

Last week, I thought I got everything prepared, but lo and behold! I forgot about my wedding shoes and earrings :'))

I got my ears pierced today but I still haven't found the right shoes--this is more difficult that I thought it would be. Turns out that beautiful and comfortable shoes are hard to find :'D

I'm still doing my best with Bermuda tho!

- 16 pages programmed in! I didn't program as much as last week--but wait! There's more!

- Programmed in new expressions for 3 important side characters (5 in total, will make more this week). These expressions are important! The drama is coming soon and I'm going to nail it! >:D

- Created 3 new visual effect/variations for important items!

- Made 1 new background variation (Ruined ver) and polished 1 old background! (I've polished this background before, but I decided to polish it more ><). Since it's been a long time, here's a special sneak peek for you -^.^-

Not bad, right?
Oh! Also, there's something I want to ask you:
- What do you think about me releasing my future games in routes? Example: Mystic Destinies, Anicon...

KyiSoRo made this suggestion and I think it's a good idea to try? I mean, I can release the game's content faster and the price is usually based on the final price of the game. If the whole game is 20$, then if I have 4 bachelors, it'll be 5$ per route! This way, you can play earlier, give me feedback to improve other route, and the fund flow will be better. But the con would be: I'm unable to touch the released routes. No more polishing once I release it (which is kinda 'eeh'... ^^; you know me. I love polishing!)

I'm still 50:50 on this so tell me what you think!
xoxo,

SweetChiel

P.S. Other than work...  um... I've been addicted to a K-drama TV series lately OuO; 'Penthouse' anyone? *runs away

But seriously, I'm hooked to it and it's frustrating that it's not completed yet! It's entering season 3 now...

Hey Chiel,

You already know which way I lean, though I will support whatever you choose. ^_^

One thing that probably should be clarified is that there are very differences between releasing whole routes vs chapters. With the whole route, you get the full story for that bachelor, so there is really no waiting to find out what happens with him. With the chapter releases, you are getting parts of the story at a time. I hate the individual chapter releases, LOL. THAT'S when I get impatient. Routes don't bother me because I see them as separate stories anyway. I think of it more like standalone novels in a continuous book series than episodes in a show.

With that said, whatever you decide, we'll support you. It all comes down to what you want to do.

Hi, KyiSoRo!
Yup, another thing to note is there are people who release by chapters not routes :'3
Personally, I also prefer by routes to avoid cliffhangers rofl. I won't be like k-drama who likes to torture its fans x'D

In any case, I'll take my time to consider the pros and cons, along with my limited programming skill~ but most importantly, thank you for saying that you'll support me no matter what -^///^- it means a lot to me!

Since pretty much everyone that commented so far seems to like the per route releases better, I felt that I had to come out of the shadows where I usually lurk to share a differing opinion. I actually quite dislike the release of games by route (Mystic Destinies, Tailor Tales, most mobile otomes) or chapter (When The Night Comes, Errant Kingdom, Andromeda Six, Our Life: Beginnings and Always).

That doesn't mean that I don't love those games, in fact I've played and loved all those games that I just listed (including quite a lot of mobile otomes back in the day), it's just that I much prefer to wait until the whole game is done so I can binge-play it all once rather than get a little at a time and then suffer waiting for the next bit. I'm quite impatient in that once I start something, I just want to finish it right away. I'd much rather be patient and wait for the finished product before starting it.

It's also hard to remember the story when it's released in parts, usually months later, and makes me usually have to replay everything I'd already done when the next part comes out, which I could avoid having to do if it just came out all at once. In fact, I sometimes just decide to wait until the whole game is done to play anyway, even if I could have started reading parts of it early, which bums me out even more because then I know that it's self-imposed waiting rather than waiting that's out of my control.

Another point against the per route release method is something you brought up, in that once they release a part, they can't go back to change anything or improve or polish anything, since it's already released. As someone who does some writing of my own, I literally don't understand how someone can release part of an unfinished story knowing that they can't go back and change or improve anything, depending on how the story's going, either plot-wise or quality-of-writing-wise.

And another thing tangentially related to my last point, I think it might actually take longer to release a game this way. Like, I gotta wait even longer because they're releasing it in parts, meaning each release has to be up to standard. They gotta go through the "is this ready for release" testing phase (proofreading, bug testing, quality check, etc) every time they release a new part, instead of just focusing on writing/programming and finishing up the game before going through the "is this ready for release" testing phase once at the end. And if the quality of the writing/game increased toward the later parts or you kinda want to change some parts of the story later, oh well, you can't, since those parts of the game have already been released. I feel like it kinda almost limits what you can do with it.

Ok, I guess I can leave it there. Seems that I'm incapable of typing anything other than a hella long message, sorry. >.<  I guess that I've just been noticing that this is more of a trend now with this genre of games, and I've just had a lot of iffy feelings about it. Despite all that, I want you to know that even if you decide to start releasing games in parts like everyone else seems to be starting to do, I will still love your games and play them anyway (just like I've loved and played those games I listed earlier even though they all released in parts). My dislike of that method of release won't be enough to keep me away, don't worry. :)  <3

Hi, ChelseaGaming!
Ah, it's really heartwarming to see you coming out and tell me your honest thoughts ^///^ please don't worry and write as long as you want! I'm always happy to read them <3

I understand too well that feeling of impatience rofl
Like, when I read an interesting novel, I could read it in one go. But if it said, 'to be continued', I'll be like... D: Another example would be how I managed to do Game of Thrones marathon in a week--I felt really satisfied and glad that I waited until Season 7 is finished x'D

You also pointed a good problem there; if I release the routes as separate games but the story intertwined, readers might find it hard to remember the plot and they'll usually have to replay it. This is a big no-no for me because it'll affect the immersion >_<

And I agree about the polishing part! You're really on point! Plot-wise or quality-of-writing-wise, It'll really bug me if someone pointed out a loophole/major grammar mistake and I can't go back to fix it ^^;

Last but not least.... *gasp* you're right!
If I treat routes as different games, there will be a lot more testing phase! I... don't think this will be a good idea because my proofreaders are busy irl and most of them volunteered to do the job. Of course, I always give them a 'reward' after they're done with their job, but I don't think my 'reward' is big enough to cover repeated 'test phase' QuQ

Overall, I'll take some time to think and take note about all the possibilities before coming to a decision. You really helped me out today by pointing so many pros and cons so thank you very much! ^////^

I'm really touched to hear you'd continue to support me no matter what >///<
Really, I can't ask for a better audience/supporters to watch my back! I love you guys and I mean it <3

I also agree overall w/ Chelsea, I prefer a fully done game, enjoyment wise, vs the episodic type, and I avoided Mystic Destinies initially(before I found out more on the dev and such to solidify it) because being newer to otome when I saw it I was confused by it's pricing and avoided it completely because of said confusion on what I needed to buy for what.
Episodic is less problematic/confusing in that way, but it's probably harder to do in an actual monetized way because you want people to get it, but if you have an upfront price for an unfinished project it can make people more wary of paying, and if you put enough out before adding a price it can also cause a bit of a stink(whether justified or not). Though I know even on tipped/PWYW stuff I try to put in what I can, because people work hard, but I know not everyone is like that.
If anything I say see what you feel most comfortable with, and you can always try it and if it doesn't work out in a way you want try a different way next time.
I'd also say DON'T be afraid to edit a game after on the routes, even big name games modify/patch/rework games. So if you feel an older part needs an update/upgrade... Do it. I think itch lets you right? It happens and shouldn't be vilified for wanting to improve your own work, and if it's a big enough change maybe keep up both versions? IDK. But it's your future games so it's utterly up to you! I'm just here for the ride. :D <3

Hi Chiel ❤ I'm the silent supporter who comments on your posts every two years, lol. But, since you're going through such a special phase preparing to your wedding, I find myself having to comment here more often. It's so fun to follow and I'm so happy for you! ヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノ

So! To answer your question, I feel like either way is great, but I'm more inclined to say I prefer releases in routes than the whole game at once.  I live in Brazil and the dollar is quite expensive these days. Because of that, it's easier for me to organize my finances to buy games that are released by route, since they are cheaper and come out periodically.

This is a very specific case and I don't think it applies for most of your fanbase, so I think what matters most is your own style as a dev. I've seen good comments talking about you as a perfectionist (same here!) and how route releases can have a negative impact on your polishing plans. In the end, I can say for certain that what feels right for you is the best approach!

We'll be fine and here anyways!

See you later! ❤

Hi, Lou! OMG, I'm so glad that those who have been supporting me silently are slowly coming out one by one! Thank you so much for the blessings and for sharing your thoughts <3

I can relate with your answer--before I play visual novels on PC, I used to play phone tome games where we need to choose a route before playing. I was okay with that, we can choose the bachelor we like and maybe ignore the ones who didn't catch our attention x'D

But sadly, after reading other comments, it's not that simple. There are pros and cons--not to mention my limited programming skills Q_Q

At most, I can probably treat the routes as separate games. I have no idea how they treat routes as DLC and connect them to the game demo x_x On the other hand, I don't mind trying something new so you guys won't have to wait years until I complete one game--what a headache x'D

But honestly, I'm somewhat flattered when you said, 'What matters mostly is your own style as dev' and 'We'll be fine and here anyways! ' >///< it tells a lot about how much you care about me and I couldn't ask for a better compliment!

Overall, I'll take some time to think and take note about all the possibilities before coming to a decision. You really helped me today thank you very much! ^////^

Hi Sweetchiel! :)

Wow ... The overworked background looks really good! The metal looks better and the shadows on the floor too. :) Was there blood on the floor before? O.O Now you can see it less. Was the intention?

To your question:

I have already played a few games after this model, but there are some differences even here.

Therefore, the first question should be: "How and what can you use technically in Renpy?" And without being confronted with other problems. (e.g., the destruction of Save-Data etc.)

For example:

- Mystic Destinies: The prologue and the first chapter of each character are free. The character routes are then a paid DLC per person (even the epilogue).

- Our Life: Beginning & Always: Completely free to play and there are only small events / stories that happen as DLC's in the individual "life-steps". The last "step" is missing, for example, completely, but remains free.

- Taisho X Alice: Maybe an unusual example. Through the translation of Japanese in English, two complete character routes are always published with a distance of about 6-10 months. (Steam)

- Tailor Tales: Here it is more important if you do support or not. At Steam, the game in the normal version is free with just 3 final character routes available. As a Pateron you get access (in the normal version) to a chapter per month for the current route. On Steam, this route will then only be available if all chapters are completed. There is also a plus version in which there is still an explicit epilogue in the end.

- There are also other games that will be released per chapter, with the difference that there is either no character routes here or only later, even if the story remains the same in the background and not changed per character. For example: When The Night Comes, Errant Kingdom, Andromeda Six

Ok .. I'm sorry that has become a bit long.

My opinion:

If you want to decide to publish each character route individually, I would probably wait for everyone to be published. Surely I mentioned it before: I like complete games absolutely more, even if it means to wait longer. In addition, I hate to wait. It is so exhausting to be patient if you want to know how it goes on (or in this case, it runs in the other routes)! o.o

In addition, as I know you, it is not your style. And of course I speak of the beloved perfectionist in you. ;) We know you love to change things and I'm afraid you would hinder yourself if you can not do that anymore.

Finally, it's your decision. (Whether you really want and it works technically) And much more important: You have to be satisfied and proud of what you are releasing. (Without regrets) :)

Until next time!

<3 Yanonako

Hi, Yanonako! You noticed the blood! x'D
You have great eyes--I decreased the blood splatters because I don't want to overuse them. Readers will become desensitized if they're exposed to it too much/too early :'3

Now then, to your answer:

OMG, I forgot to take the save files into consideration! :o thank you so much for pointing this out! *hugs* This is a really important matter and as I read other comments above, I realized there would be new troubles appearing if I treat the routes as different games, like: The unnecessarily big game size (They will definitely take a lot of space), the separate save files, and the readers might forget about the story (unless I make different stories for each bachelor).

Overall, I need some time to think and take note about all the possibilities with their pros and cons--but you guys really helped me by pointing these things out so thank you! ^////^

My perfectionist side is also somewhat flattered when you say, 'it's not your style' >///<
Honestly, this is outside my comfort zone, but I'm willing to try something new for you--I mean, I feel really bad when I think about how many people are waiting for me to complete my game QuQ

So again, thank you so much for sharing your opinion on this matter! *bows*
I'll take your feedbacks and carefully consider things before I decide on anything!
xoxo,

SweetChiel <3

Hi SweetChiel! ;)

Surely I noticed the blood. I'm pretty visual! XD Your comment sounds dark (too much, too early ...) O.O How much blood is flowing?! (If I decide wrong)

It's a pleasure. ;)

Save-Data: I have to think about it as first. Also because I already had problems with these. Sometimes even because of minimal changes.

Also, the others have introduced many points that I had not thought. Particularly important I find the point "Forgot the story". That's what happend to me, when the period between the publications was too big.

How wonderful that so many have shared their own opinion. That was certainly very helpful for you. :)

Bye

Hello, Chiel! Thank you for the good work!

I love binging. So, if you are releasing them by routes, I don't think I will buy them until it's all complete! So there's no difference for me. Because of that, I'm like shrug "Eh, it's okay either way".

But when you say that you love polishing, by that time I'm 100% leaning towards "releasing the complete game" instead! Rather than giving me a chance to play the game earlier, I would much rather that you are proud and not regretting what you have put out 😂 Oh you perfectionist you 😂 (I understand that tho haha)

K-Dramas are great! I love watching them too. I especially love historical ones tho, like saeguk 😆 Or thriller, psychological, mystery, horror, or intrigue lol I don't really watch the romcom ones, even with how much I love romance. Too cheesy for me lol I think Penthouse is in the drama side not romance, so I've been wanting to check that out! Too bad K-Dramas are looong, I'm too lazy to watch them until finished. But ironically I have finished watching Empress Ki, which has 51 eps HAHAHA It's a saeguk and intrigue. Soooo, yeah 😆

Edit: Eh, for some reason my eyes skipped the "better fund flow"... I mean finance is pretty important. So now I'm 50:50 instead 😂😂 I guess this is a matter of sacrificing A for B, or B for A. Maybe it's better to look at your reality first then you can look at anything else.

Hi, PangHerHeart! You're welcome and as always, thanks for dropping by <3

😂 The perfectionist me have nothing to say--I really do love polishing and my greatest fear is there would come a time where I'd think, 'Oh no! I could do better if I replace this sentence with ______ or _____!'

Aaah, what a headache! There are pro cons and there are so much to consider.
On one hand, I want to take my take my time and give you the 'complete pack' in one go. But on the other hand, I wish I can give you something faster so you won't need to wait so long ><; the fund flow is also better that way (my wallet will thank me for that rofl)

But then again, after reading other comments, there's another problem I need to take notice; if I release my game in routes (I will probably treat them as different games) = the save files will be probably reset/separated, the game size will also be unnecessarily big and takes space... and... that's all I can think for now.

Overall, I need some time to think and take note about all the possibilities with their pros and cons--but you guys really helped me by pointing these things out so thank you! ^////^

As for K-Drama... IKR?!
They're so good but one episode is like one hour Q_Q by the time I finished watching a few episodes, it's already midnight OTL where did the time go?

But I gotta hand it to Korea. They make really good tv series and movies covering all genre!
The Korean movies I saw in cinemas never failed to make me cry/laugh/sit on the edge of my seat!

If you like horror/thriller, I recommend Deranged, Train to Busan, or The Flu! OuO)b

(+2)

On one hand, I love playing a full game and being able to binge, but I've also really enjoyed other games that have released by routes! (Tailor Tales is a pretty good example :) ) Although I do have a preference of routes rather than episodes ^^'

I like to think that it's kinda the same with tv shows. It's more exciting to have to wait for the next installment rather than to have the whole season at your fingertips ^.^" I am a little confused on the polishing aspect though, most of the games I've seen have been able to go back to certain routes and be able to edit them after completing them. Unless you mean otherwise? :)

Of course it's ultimately up to your comfort! We're all fine with having to wait :) I hope everything is going well with the wedding planning ^u^ it's always the little things that are forgotten, at my quinceañera we had gotten the church and pastor all planned out but we left my crown at my house LMAO I had to use the church's plastic one :(( I hope other than those little hiccups that you haven't been too stressed out! :)

(1 edit) (+1)

Hi, ro-ses!
I know Tailor Tales and yes! I agree that it's very good <3

Unfortunately, I don't think they're using Ren'Py to code it. I will probably have to look up/ask in lemmasoft forum whether Ren'Py can treat routes as DLC or not. I, myself, would much prefer it if we can treat the routes as DLC so we can access it via the game demo >_<

My programming skill is self-taught so it's limited. I can separate the routes and treat them as different games, but to release them as DLC and somehow link them to the game demo? O_O; you'll find me sweating.

As for the polishing aspect... hmm... how do I explain this...
You see, my grammar is far from good x_x you can ask my proofreaders and I'm sure they'll say I still have lots to learn :')) Therefore, I developed this habit; I often go back and forth to polish sentences/paragraphs.

For example:
If the original sentence is, 'Seeing him getting frustrated, I felt sad.'
Then, when I remember/find a better grammar, I'll go back and change it to become, 'Seeing him getting frustrated, I felt my heart ache.'

I know this is a minor thing but believe me when I say I do this often! I have notes only for polishing rofl. Nevertheless, thank you for giving me your honest opinion and for supporting me no matter what ^////^ *hugg

and LOL, I can see myself forgetting the veil/crown like you did :"))
You're right though, it's always the small things and it's getting kinda stressful how many things we have to prepare for the wedding--so thank you for the concern <3 So far, nothing is out of hand yet x'D

xoxo,

SweetChiel

Mystic Destinies released different from Anicon. I have both  (only Steam version) so I think I can give you my opinion.

Mystic destinies released the game demo as base and allowed you to unlock a route by buying the route dlc. I have the full game (bought all routes) and all of them are accessible by running the game demo.

So in Bermuda, it would be the current demo then each dlc purchase unlocked its respective route in the demo. To play a route, I would only need to run the game demo and select the unlocked route I bought.

Our Life: Beginnings & Always also have the same strategy. They are on steam and itch if you'd like to check. (I was not paid to promote the game)

Anicon releases routes separately as each route is a separate game.

So applying this to Bermuda, it would be each route as a separate game.

I have nothing against it if you decide that it is the best course of action to release your games route by route.

However, I would prefer the way Mystic Destinies released their routes. For me, it's convenient to have the game demo unlock routes as I purchase each route dlc, rather than have to buy multiple routes and all of them are separated games.

My limitations in English don't allow me to form a better explanation of my points of view, so I hope I was able to convey my opinion and help you with your decision.

(1 edit)

Hi, Darkrosen!
Thank you so much for explaining things to me -^.^-

So there are 2 types; one that feels like a DLC that can be accessible by running the game demo OR treat each route as separate games...

Hmm... I, myself, prefer to have each route act like a DLC and you can access them in the demo--but I don't know how to do this @@ My programming skill is self-taught so it's pretty limited. I'd probably have to ask around about what program they used and the code involved.

I understand things better now--your explanation is clear and concise! I admire you for that and your English is very good! OuO)b

Thanks again for dropping by and sharing your thoughts!
